Fresh Glasgow Queen Street plans include for new 'distinctive' entrance and landscaped outdoor plaza

Network Rail has submitted plans for the next stage in the major redevelopment of Glasgow Queen Street station.

The plans, submitted earlier this month to Glasgow City Council, propose for a new extension to the station housing new station facilities including retail, food and beverage outlets and additional station operational facilities.

A "distinctive" new station entrance at Cathedral Street level and an enhanced station entrance at North Hanover Street also form part of the proposals, along with the construction of a development deck at Cathedral Street level capable of supporting a mixed-use commercial development including 300,000sq. ft of Grade A office development.

The new podium building would be located to the east of the original train shed bordering North Hanover Street in an area most recently used as a works compound and to house temporary accommodation for station staff during the concourse extension.

The vision for the proposed podium is to create "a distinctive gateway" which "celebrates travel, proudly announces arrival into Glasgow and travel throughout Scotland, recognising the architecture and heritage both of the station and Glasgow city centre".

The proposals also include for a new landscaped plaza space for the city directly linked to the station and which will "provide an area for the public to use when waiting on a train or meeting up with others as well as enhanced routes through the station towards North Hanover Street and Cathedral Street".

The plaza would focus on the new station entrance and provide for "a variety of activities", as well as "a functional new concourse which is also a pleasant and light space with views to and from the existing concourse and of the train shed".

The application is currently 'pending consideration' by Glasgow City Council's planning department.
