Fresh flooding chaos on Oxford Road after another burst water main

Oxford Road has been hit by fresh flooding chaos today after another burst water pipe.

Fire crews are at the scene near the junction with Dover Street where there are large pools of water and workers digging up the road.

The surface has only just been re-laid to allow Oxford Road to reopen last weekend following flooding caused by a burst water main.

United Utilities said the repairs, which lasted around ten days, had been successfully completed.

Although the leak is in an almost identical location it is understood it is not the same pipe that is involved.

A United Utilities spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a leak on Oxford Road earlier today and a team of engineers were quickly dispatched to site to investigate.

"We are pleased to confirm that no customer supplies were affected and work is ongoing to initiate a repair."

Firefighters have closed off the road and are assisting with efforts to remove water from the scene.

There is a small amount of flooding in a nearby building, the fire service said.

A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At approximately 2pm on Sunday, 10 th October, firefighters were called to assist United Utilities at the site of a burst water main on Oxford Road, Manchester.

“One fire engine from Moss Side and a hose-laying lorry from Cheadle attended the scene. The burst water main has caused flooding on the roadway and a full road closure is in place at the junction of Dover Street. A small amount of flooding is affecting a nearby building."

“Firefighters are working alongside colleagues from United Utilities to remove the floodwater and remain in attendance at this time.

"We would like to thank everyone for their continued patience and understanding.”

Bus company Stagecoach tweeted out a link to details of the relevant diversions.

The road closure appears to be having a knock-on effect with reports of heavy congestion in the Rusholme area.

Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted tonight: "Rusholme - Heavy Congestion in both directions.
