Fresh faces in McGowan's new WA cabinet

Labor is on track to dominate WA's lower house seats and to wrestle control of the upper house. (AAP)

Premier Mark McGowan has unveiled his new-look cabinet, promising Labor will use its dominant position to govern in the interests of all West Australians.

Five new ministers will be sworn in on Friday, with Peter Tinley dumped from his housing and fisheries portfolios.

As expected, Amber-Jade Sanderson, Don Punch, Reece Whitby, Tony Buti and John Carey are the new faces.

Labor stalwart and former police minister Michelle Roberts will become the first female Speaker of the lower house.

The other vacancies arise from the retirement of Treasurer Ben Wyatt and veterans Fran Logan and Mick Murray.

Mr McGowan will announce the allocation of portfolios on Thursday, with intrigue surrounding who will serve as treasurer.

The premier has not ruled out taking on the responsibility himself, something his Liberal predecessor Colin Barnett also briefly did.

Deputy Premier and Health Minister Roger Cook and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti are the other two contenders.

Mr McGowan's popularity was the key factor in Labor's huge election win, handing him almost unprecedented authority over selections.

The ongoing count has Labor on track to claim up to 53 out of 59 lower house seats and to wrestle control of the upper house.

Labor's enlarged caucus gathered on Wednesday in the parliamentary dining room, with the Labor partyroom deemed too small to accommodate all MPs.

"Being a minister is a privilege and comes with significant responsibilities," Mr McGowan said in a statement.

"I am confident my team will carry out their duties responsibly and diligently, and we will continue to govern in the interests of all Western Australians.

"My cabinet team includes a mix of experience and renewal, with members from the city and the regions. Our new ministers worked extremely hard during our first term, and have each proven themselves ready to take on a new role on behalf of the WA community."
