Ryan Yates could put pen to paper on a fresh contract before Nottingham Forest head to Millwall on Friday night.
It is understood the 22-year-old is close to signing a new deal with the Reds, and it could be agreed within the next 24 or 48 hours.
Forest have already tied fellow Nigel Doughty Academy product Matty Cash to a longer terms, with the midfielder/full-back penning a three-and-a-half-year deal last week.
A new contract for Yates would likely be of a similar length as the club look to secure the futures of their rising young stars.
Yates has been restricted to four appearances so far this season, having undergone surgery in the summer after a long-standing knee problem flared up when he returned for pre-season training.

He made his comeback in October, coming off the bench in the 2-1 defeat at home to Hull City.
Since then, he has featured against Luton Town, Derby County and Bristol City, with a red card picked up in the latter leaving him to serve a three-match suspension.
It means he will miss this week’s clash against the Lions, but will be back in contention to face Middlesbrough next Tuesday night.
