Fresh delay in Edinburgh Sick Kids hospital move after doctors express concerns

The move to a new Edinburgh Sick Kids hospital has suffered a fresh delay.

Senior doctors have raised concerns about relocating services to the new facility in the middle of a pandemic.

As a result the move to shift some the Department of Clinical Neurosciences and admin support staff has come under the microscope.

Health secretary Jeane Freeman confirmed the "phased move" of outpatient services and admin support staff on May 11.

However she also revealed a commitment to "revisit" the timescale for moving some inpatient services to the new site in order to allow neurosciences critical care teams to support the Covid-19 response at the Western General.

The Daily Record reports that Ms Freeman confirmed the "pause" in a letter to local parliamentarians.

According to the Record Western General consultants wrote to NHS Lothian this month to say "we need to be completely focused on the task ahead" and that "the uncertainty of a service move would be a dangerous distraction".

Edinburgh Live reported earlier today how ten senior doctors had blasted plans to open up parts of the hospital.

It emerged at the weekend that an opening date for the new hospital had now been set for November 23.

Confirmation of this date, and a final decision, will likely be made mid-October – around six weeks earlier.
