CHENNAI: The cluster tally on the IIT-M campus rose to 196 on Saturday after 13 more students tested positive for Covid-19. Fresh cases in Tamil Nadu fell to 49 compared to 54 on Friday and 73 on Thursday.
The state discharged 43 patients and continued to report zero deaths due to viral infection. At the end of the day, active cases rose to 513 from 507 on Friday. At least 12 lakh people took their shots during the mega vaccination camp.
“Fresh cases in the state have dropped over the past two days. The cumulative test positivity rate at IIT is around 2.7%. Over the past two days, 55 patients from IIT have been discharged. The health condition of all patients on campus continues to remain stable. Early detection helped us contain the cluster within the campus,” health secretary J Radhakrishnan said.
Chennai with 36 cases, continued to report the maximum number of new infections followed by Chengalpet (6). Seven districts – Erode, Kanyakumari, Namakkal, Salem, Tiruvallur and Vellore – reported one case each. Twenty-nine of the 38 districts reported no new cases compared on Saturday.
Of the 513 active cases, 347 were in Chennai and Chengalpet reported 57 followed by Tiruvallur (14), Coimbatore (12)and Kancheepuram (11). There were 12 active cases in Coimbatore. While 24 districts had between one and nine active cases, nine districts were covid free on Saturday. tnn
