Fresh Covid cases dip; no deaths in 21 Tamil Nadu districts

CHENNAI: Fresh cases of Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu dropped to 1,830 on Friday when nearly 21 districts including cities such as Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Tiruppur, reported zero deaths.

The weaning epidemic wave brought the active cases in the state to 24,816.

27. Since then, the active cases have been falling. "Cases of viral infections are steadily coming down. But we still want people to wear mask and maintain social distance," said health secretary J Radhakrishnan.

Barring four districts – Coimbatore (177), Erode (135), Chennai (130) and Salem (110) – all other districts in the state reported fewer than 100 cases. While there were 25 districts with cases below 50, there were 13 districts with less than 25 cases each. Perambalur (8) was the only district to report cases in single digit. While Theni and Ramanathapuram reported ten each, Tenkasi had 11 cases. Six districts reported more cases on Friday compared to Thursday. Tuticorin, which reported 17 cases on Thursday, had 26 on Friday. Cases in Tirunelveli, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Mayiladuthurai and Tenkasi were also marginally higher on Friday.

At the end of the day, 2,516 patients were discharged from the state registry, even as public health workers drew samples from 1.3 lakh people. Of the 24 deaths, Coimbatore reported four, followed by Pudukottai (3) and two each in Mayiladuthurai and Perambalur. Thirteen other districts reported one death each.

Meanwhile, more than 3.2lakh people received vaccinations at the government centres taking the cumulative dosage tally of vaccinations at public centre to 1.9 crore. Over the last one week, the state has administered vaccination to 15 lakh people – an average of 1.2 lakh people every day. Meanwhile, with 21136 vaccinations, the private hospitals in the state have so far vaccinated 13.2 lakh people since May1.
