The highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases so far was reported in Kozhikode district on Sunday when 304 people were declared positive for SARS-CoV-2. The number of infected persons is crossing the 300-mark here for the first time. The district is just behind Thiruvananthapuram in terms of the highest number of cases.
According to the District Medical Officer, 266 people got the infection through local transmission. The source of infection of 16 people is not known. Others had returned from either abroad or from other States. Kozhikode Corporation had 60 new cases through local transmission of the infection, Vadakara 30, Chorod 29, Peruvayal 22, Azhiyoor 20, and Villiappally had 19 cases. With 110 people recovering from COVID-19, the number of active cases in Kozhikode is 2,036 now.
Surge in Vadakara
Meanwhile, the Health Department claimed that Vadakara cluster was seeing a rise in the number of cases with 274 people under treatment from there and Chorod. The other clusters from where a high number of people are getting infected are Vellayil and Mukhadar.
Of the 216 confirmed cases reported from various wards in Vadakara, 103 are active now. In Chorod, 307 cases were confirmed and 171 are active now. Fifty-five cases were reported from Vadakara and 26 in Chorod in the past three days alone. In Vellayil, 97 of the 197 reported cases are active, in Mukhadar 39 of the 102 cases are active, and 41 of the 111 cases are active in Thiruvalloor.
In Malappuram
As many as 195 people tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in Malappuram on Sunday. There were 328 recoveries too. District Collector K. Gopalakrishnan said that the higher number of recoveries portended well for the district.
As many as 161 of the new cases were found to have contracted the virus through local contacts.
The source of infection in 23 cases could not be traced. There were three health workers among the new cases.
The number of infected cases currently under treatment in Malappuram fell to 2,742 on Sunday. More than 47,000 people have been quarantined across the district.
In Thrissur
As many as 151 COVID-19 cases were reported in Thrissur district on Sunday.
Of them, 146 were local transmission cases.
The source of infection of 18 people is not known.
There are now 1,442 active cases in the district. In all, 8,754 people are under observation.
ICU set up
A COVID-19 isolation intensive care unit (ICU) will start functioning at the Government Medical College Hospital, Thrissur, from September 2.
Chalakudy MP Benny Behanan will inaugurate the facility. The ICU has been set up using ₹16 lakh from the MP fund of Alathur MP Ramya Haridas.
Once the pandemic dies down, the ICU facility will be useful for people with head and spine injuries, according to hospital sources.
Ramya Haridas and T.N. Prathapan, MPs; Anil Akkara, MLA, and District Collector S. Shanavas will attend the function.
In Kasaragod
As many as 159 COVID-19 cases were reported in Kasaragod district on Sunday. Of this, 143 people contracted the disease through contact, seven came from other States and nine returned from abroad.
The district also reported 117 recoveries on Sunday.
In Kannur
A total of 112 people tested positive for the virus in Kannur on Sunday.
Of this, 88 people contracted the infection through contact.
The district has so far reported 3,516 COVID-19 cases and 2,476 recoveries.
In Palakkad
Forty-five people tested positive in Palakkad on Sunday. There were 64 recoveries in the district.
While 16 people contracted the disease through local transmission, 17 cases were from other States and one came from abroad. There were 10 cases whose source of infection could not be traced.
In Wayanad
Wayanad district reported 13 COVID-19 cases on Sunday. Of those tested positive, eight contracted the virus through local transmission. There were 22 recoveries too in the district.
