Fresh blow for Staffordshire shopping centre as more big-name retailers close

A shopping centre has been dealt a fresh blow after two big-name retailers announced their closure.

Claire's and The Works will shut their branches inside the Guildhall Shopping Centre, in Stafford, this weekend.

It comes two just weeks after non-essential retailers were allowed to re-open as part of the Government's roadmap out of lockdown and follows the closure of Clarks, which was also based at the centre.

Now Stafford Borough Council has confirmed it is talks with a number of businesses inside the shopping centre to urge them to remain in the town.

Council spokesman Will Conaghan said: "We are already speaking with several businesses within the Guildhall to look at relocation in other areas of the town centre.

"We need to know their requirements and what help we can offer them to enable them to stay in Stafford. We are also in touch with the owners of available premises in the town.

"We announced earlier this year that the indoor market could be relocated and redesigned, within the town centre, to improve footfall as part of the £22 million plans to carry out a major transformation of the north end of the High Street."
