JAMMU: Amidst tight security, a fresh batch of 6,159 pilgrims left the Yatri Niwas Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu on Friday morning for two base camps in Kashmir for their onward pilgrimage to Amarnath cave shrine.
The pilgrims left the base camp in a fleet of 228 vehicles.
An official said, the pilgrims, including 4754 males, 1220 females, 35 children, 139 sadhus and 11 Sadvis left the base camp in 125 buses ( heavy motor vehicles-HMVs), 123 light motor vehicles (LMVs) and one two wheeler to perform pilgrimage from Pahalgam and Baltal routes.
"Of 6,159 pilgrims, 2,037 left for Baltal in convoy of 95 vehicles (39 HMVs, 55 LMVs and one two wheeler) while the rest 4,122 in convoy of 154 vehicles ( 86 HMVs and 68 LMVs) ) left for Pahalgam base camp with security escort," official added.
Jammu and Kashmir lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha on June 29 flagged off the first batch of Amarnath Yatra pilgrims from the Jammu base camp.
Conducted after remaining suspended for two years due to Covid pandemic, the 43-day-long Yatra, this year, will conclude on August 11 on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.
