Frenkie de Jong admits his disappointment in Matthijs de Ligt decision

Frenkie de Jong says he would have rather compatriot Matthijs de Ligt had joined Barcelona over Juventus, but concedes it was his decision.

The Dutch duo grew up alongside each other at Ajax and both burst onto the scene at the same time as two of the most promising young players in the world.

They were both an integral part of the Ajax side that reached the semi-final of the Champions League last season, and as a result caught the eye of Europe's elite clubs.

Barcelona made it their mission to land both players, and snapped up De Jong before the summer transfer window had even opened.

The Catalan giants then swooped for De Ligt, but the centre-back took his time before making a decision as clubs scrambled to sign him.

It wasn't long before De Ligt had offers on the table from clubs including Barcelona, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

Barcelona remained favourites for his signature until the end of the summer but it was Juventus who eventually won the race to sign De Ligt.

On his former team-mate, De Jong told Gazzetta dello Sport: "I haven't seen every game and I can't analyse everything.

"I watched his games against Fiorentina and Atletico Madrid and I think he is playing well.

"He has had a good start, he is still very young and is already like a star in Juventus. Of course I would like to have played with him at Barcelona, but it was his decision."
