French TV station appoints first black news anchor

France will pass a cultural landmark today when a black presenter reads the evening news bulletin on the country's most popular television channel for the first time. Harry Roselmack, who is from Martinique in the French West Indies, has been appointed as a stand-in at TF1 during the holiday season, but his appointment is attracting publicity in a country unused to seeing black faces in high-profile positions outside sport. Although the country's ethnic minorities represent almost 10% of the population, few have prominent roles on TV. (Via timesonline.co.uk)
