French Senate report to call Champions League final a 'fiasco'

A French Senate report is expected to call the Champions League final a "fiasco".

A report from the Senate's Law and Culture committee is expected to call the events surrounding the Champions League final a "fiasco". The report, due to be presented on Wednesday, July 13, will point to "major organisational flaws" from the French authorities, according to France Info.

The match between Liverpool FC and Real Madrid on May 28 this year was marred by a number of serious incidents. The ECHO spoke to LFC fans in the days following the match who detailed their horrific experiences which included being tear gassed by police, denied access to the stadium despite having valid tickets, and being attacked and robbed by locals in Saint Denis.

Ted Morris and Joe Blott, chairs of Liverpool Disabled Supporters Association and Spirit of Shankly respectively, appeared at the French Senate last month. Mr Morris, who went to the match, previously told the ECHO he "feared for his life".

The two men said Stade de France is not suitable to host major events. The stadium in Paris is due to host the Rugby World Cup and Olympic Games in the next two years.

The head of police in Paris, Didier Lallement, is expected to be called a "failure" in the Senate report. Mr Lallement was criticised for his role in the police's heavy-handed approach to fans.

Mr Lallement apologised following the match and said he was "the only one responsible" for the Champions League disaster. The French Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, has also apologised for his part in the events after falsely claiming 30-40,000 fans with false tickets were to blame.

The Senate report will be presented at 11am on Wednesday, July 13 during a press conference.
