French rugby legend Christophe Dominici dies suddenly at the age of 48

Former France winger Christophe Dominici has died suddenly at the age of 48.

Reports emerged in France of Dominici's passing on Tuesday, with his former club, Stade Francais confirmed the news in a statement, saying: "It is with immense sadness that the Stade Francis learns of the death of Christophe Dominici".

The causes of death are yet unknown.

Dominci won 67 caps for his country in an international career that spanned nearly a decade.

Having made his debut in try-scoring form in 1998, he produced the moments he was perhaps best known for the year after - when he was the scourge of New Zealand in their memorable 43-31 World Cup semi-final win over the All Blacks.

He finished his Test career in 2007 - with 25 tries across his 67 appearances.

Tributes have already poured in from around the rugby world.

Former Ireland centre Brian O'Driscoll tweeted: "Very sad to hear of the sudden passing of Christophe Dominici. A French player full of flair with huge success throughout his career. May he RIP."

World Rugby posted a tribute to him on their Twitter page, which read: “A legend of France Rugby and an all-time great of the game. Rest In Peace, Christophe Dominici.”

The Rugby Players Association added: “Terribly sad news to hear of the passing of Christophe Dominici. A true legend of the game, RIP.”
