Eight revellers had a New Year’s Eve they will never forget – after getting stuck 170 feet above the ground on a fairground ride for more than eight hours.

French firefighters said three adults and five teenagers were trapped high in the air from New Year's Eve into the early hours of 2019.

The revellers - the youngest aged 13 - were stuck about 52m above the ground in the western city of Rennes.

Witnesses quoted by local paper Ouest-France said the pendulum ride broke down at about 8.30pm with huge noise and sparks.

It left one of the two passenger sections suspended at the highest point.

Firefighters used a helicopter to reach the trapped people and provide them with harnesses so that they could be winched down onto a firefighters' ladder.

They all reached the ground safely on Tuesday morning.
