The woes of the French press are hardly news but a new government study of France's top 300 publishers has revealed a depressingly bad situation. The review, conducted by the Direction for Media Development and published in Le Monde, shows that sales and ad revenues fell 2.6% and 0.6% respectively in 2005 compared to the previous year. Hardest hit was the serious national press. Total newspaper revenues, at less than €1.46bn (£996m), were even lower than another especially bad year, 1993. (Via Editors Weblog - all postings)
