French President Macron welcomed by President Michael D Higgins before meeting Taoiseach

French President Emmanual Macron has arrived at Áras an Uachtaráin to meet President Michael D Higgins on his first official visit to Ireland.

President Macron is undertaking a one day tour of Dublin.

Afterwards, Taoiseach Micheál Martin will greet President Macron at Government Buildings and both are expected to discuss Covid-19, the future of the EU and the ongoing situation in Afghanistan.

Mr Martin and President Macron will later hold a joint press conference with journalists.

The Fianna Fáil leader is expected to be asked about the relaxation of all remaining Covid-19 restrictions in Ireland.

The French President will spend just one day in Dublin and will visit Trinity College and the Guinness Enterprise Centre.

He is expected to engage with students on a series of topics during his visit to Trinity College.

The itinerary of the French party will also include bilateral meetings with their Irish counterparts, Minister Coveney, Minister Donohoe and Minister of State Byrne.

President Macron will be accompanied by a relatively large travelling press party of up to 15 journalists.

To end his trip to Ireland, President Macron is set to return to Áras an Uachtaráin, where President Higgins will host a reception in his honour.
