French President gives holiday update on chances of welcoming Irish tourists as lockdown eased

French President Emmanuel Macron has not ruled out tourists visiting this summer as the country starts to lift its lockdown.

President Macron said it's "too early" to say if holidays to the European country will be off the table until after the summer months or even next year.

France is ready to start their gradual easing of lockdown restrictions with the first changes coming on Monday.

People still cannot travel over 100km from their homes while bars, restaurants, cafes and cinemas will all stay closed for the time being.

Speaking in a televised interview, the President said: "We're going to limit major international travel, even during the summer holidays.

"We will remain among Europeans, and maybe we will have to limit that even more."

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister's office confirmed to French outlet The Local that the travel restrictions on people entering France will continue after May 11th.

Macron added: "The virus is still here, we have not beaten it."

Hundreds of thousands of Irish people head to France every year with it being one of our most popular tourist spots.

It remains to be seen if Ireland itself will allow non-essential travel outside of the country before the summer months end.
