Jakub Mensik outlasts Joao Fonseca in battle of new stars but greater test awaits
Tuesday 2 June 2026 23:32 , Flo Clifford
In a battle of two youngsters heavily tipped to challenge leading lights Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, it was Jakub Mensik who outlasted younger opponent Joao Fonseca to book a place in his first grand slam semi-final.
The match in some ways mimicked those early clashes between Alcaraz and Sinner: the flashy, much-hyped, pure shotmaker and entertainer against the more brutal, clinical, machine-like opponent. And in this case it was the precise serving of Mensik – coupled with a delicate touch at the net – that prevailed over the more spectacular, but equally more erratic, tennis of his 19-year-old challenger.
The Czech sped through the first two sets before a sudden drop-off in the third, with Fonseca pulling ahead only to be pegged back several times and eventually falling 6-4 6-3 7-6(3) – having saved six match points along the way.

Tuesday 2 June 2026 22:13 , Flo Clifford
Fonseca goes long on the first exchange, then tries to get the better of Mensik with a drop shot - but the Czech just about gets there before it dies and the cross-court reply is too much for Fonseca.
TIE-BREAK! Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3, 6-6 Joao Fonseca

Just brilliant from the 19-year-old, who floats up to the net and palms a delicate backhand drop shot right onto the line. Another game point.... and Mensik, going for the down the line backhand, hits the net!

Another match point Mensik...
Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3, 6-5 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 22:02 , Flo Clifford
Fonseca’s forehand loops well long.
A big first serve keeps him in it.
DEUCE! Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3, 6-5 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 22:02 , Flo Clifford
Two loose balls from Fonseca - the latter requiring a check from the umpire at the baseline - and Mensik has an opening at 0-30.
But he can’t capitalise on a second serve, spraying well wide.
But an absolutely venomous forehand brings up match point... Fonseca stays alive as a second serve just about stays in, and Mensik clips the tape.
It’s all set up for the Czech on another match point but he blasts wide! Deuce!
Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3, 6-5 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 21:57 , Flo Clifford
Two brutal serves from the Czech, and now Fonseca will serve to stay in this set.
*Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3, 5-5 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 21:56 , Flo Clifford
Mensik is trying to keep the points short on serve but as he comes to the net Fonseca whizzes a vicious forehand past him deep into the open court. 30-30.
And he gestures to the crowd to make some noise - which they’re certainly willing to oblige - as he send Mensik wheeling back to a lob before tapping in a drop shot. 30-40...
Mensik serves and volleys for deuce.

The Czech has a look-in on second serve but shanks the net and covers his face with his hand. Deuce.
Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3, 4-5 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 21:44 , Flo Clifford
Mensik just about kisses the line and there’s a bit of confusion as the umpire appears to be preparing to check the mark, before Fonseca waves him away. A nice sportsmanlike gesture - but how crucial could that be in this game? The ball looked in from up here in the media seats, but we’re quite high up.
The Brazilian goes long for 15-30 before a huge serve. But he double faults on a 205km/h second serve!!!
An ace (slower than that second serve) brings up deuce.
Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3, 4-5 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 21:39 , Flo Clifford
Mensik battles back, keeping the points short with the old serve and volley, and holds to 15.
*Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3, 3-5 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 21:37 , Flo Clifford
Fonseca is trying to move Mensik around the court as much as possible and the Czech is struggling to reach the ball at full stretch now - although a lethal backhand fizzes right back at Fonseca’s feet.
He has the Czech planted right in the centre of the baseline though in the next exchange and hammers the forehand into the open court.
Now Mensik goes long, and must serve to stay in the set. The umpire reminds everyone to stay quiet as the players serve. That feels unlikely.
BREAK! Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3, 3-4 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 21:33 , Flo Clifford
Mensik is looking increasingly tired and troubled by that left leg. Fonseca breaks as the Czech whacks into the net.

Tuesday 2 June 2026 21:21 , Flo Clifford

Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3, 1-2 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 21:19 , Flo Clifford
Fonseca mimes throwing his racquet on the ground after two unforced errors, spraying wide for 0-30.
And the forehand goes wide again! Three break points Mensik...
He wastes the first one with a backhand long. The second one goes begging too as a down-the-line strike narrowly misses.
And Fonseca clips a drop shot over the net for deuce!
Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3, 1-2 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 21:15 , Flo Clifford
Mensik’s first serve has gone rather AWOL. From 40-15 up he loses the next two points, shanking into the net, and his head has dropped somewhat.
Having said that, a huge serve out wide is exactly what he needs. And an ace down the T to follow.
He holds, but appears to be troubled by his leg, and gives it a stretch at the changeover.
*Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3, 0-2 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 21:10 , Flo Clifford
Fonseca’s self-belief is back and Mensik can’t keep the ball in the court. The Brazilian holds to love.
BREAK! Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3, 0-1 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 21:08 , Flo Clifford

*Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 21:07 , Flo Clifford
And the crowd goes absolutely WILD as Mensik just about reaches a lob - but goes long! A first break point for Fonseca of this match.
Fonseca can’t return a booming first serve. Back to deuce.
Mensik goes long! Advantage Fonseca...
*Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 21:05 , Flo Clifford
So, how will Fonseca respond?
A fierce forehand down the line is a good start. Mensik double faults for 15-30, then waits for the Fonseca lob to go out, which it duly does. But frustration is etched on the teenager’s face as he shanks a backhand well wide of the tramline.
A second double fault brings up deuce. This is only the second time Mensik has been taken to deuce in this entire match.
GAME AND SECOND SET! Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-3 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:57 , Flo Clifford
Another lengthy rally goes Mensik’s way as he turns a baseline slog into a net battle, and Fonseca can’t quite get his reply over the net! Another astonishing exchange.
Oh, and Fonseca double faults. Set point Mensik...
And he takes it! It’s another ludicrous 12-shot point, but Mensik has all the answers and Fonseca lunges for yet another dig - and goes long!
Jakub Mensik 6-4, 5-3 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:54 , Flo Clifford
That acutely angled forehand volley by Mensik is proving lethal and so it proves again for 30-30 on the Fonseca serve.
Mensik goes long but then puts the Brazilian under pressure at the net, and Fonseca shanks into the tape.
But then Mensik nets too... and the umpire has to calm proceedings down again. Fonseca goes for the smash and the unforced error comes from his forehand side again, and we’re back to deuce.
Mensik whips a short forehand onto the line and has set point!
Saved, as Fonseca lashes a forehand onto the line himself. Deuce.
Jakub Mensik 6-4, 5-3 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:47 , Flo Clifford
The ‘oles’ are out for Fonseca now and as Mensik double faults immediately after an unreturnable serve the volume goes up again. Mensik responds with an inch-perfect forehand into the postage stamp of the corner, then another unreturnable serve.
Fonseca will serve to stay in this set.
*Jakub Mensik 6-4, 4-3 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:43 , Flo Clifford
Much cleaner from Fonseca, who holds to love.
Jakub Mensik 6-4, 4-2 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:40 , Flo Clifford
Mensik plays a cute drop shot which Fonseca taps back over the net, but somehow the 20-year-old gets there and goes cross-court - which Fonseca lunges to, but can only send dribbling wide.
He has more luck as Mensik sends another drop shot into the net, but then hammers home an overhead smash to back up his break.
BREAK! *Jakub Mensik 6-4, 3-2 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:35 , Flo Clifford
Fonseca looks to be caught off balance but somehow his looping forehand just about drops in and clips the line!
He races to 40-0 before a first double fault, then dumps a forehand into the net, and suddenly Mensik has a look-in at 40-30... and Fonseca goes long!
And again Mensik outlasts him in an 18-shot rally; Fonseca moves to the net to finish the job, but Mensik remains steadfast and hooks the backhand cross-court behind him for break point!
And with a sharply angled drop shot, he breaks!
Jakub Mensik 6-4, 2-2 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:31 , Flo Clifford
Mensik blasts a forehand winner into the far corner that Fonseca somehow manages to get to - but can only send it into the crowd. Another fearsome ace out wide, his sixth of the match so far, seals the hold to 30.
*Jakub Mensik 6-4, 1-2 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:27 , Flo Clifford
The pair trade businesslike holds.
Jakub Mensik 6-4, 0-1 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:24 , Flo Clifford

*Jakub Mensik 6-4, 0-1 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:21 , Flo Clifford
A couple of loose errors from Mensik gives Fonseca an easy hold at the start of this second set.
GAME AND FIRST SET! Jakub Mensik 6-4 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:16 , Flo Clifford
Mensik serves for the set. There’s a bit of murmuring from the crowd as he takes his time swiping clay off the baseline between serves, and as he nets for 30-15 the Brazilian contingent roar their support until the umpire quietens them down.
The Czech’s defence is peerless at the moment though and he somehow escapes in the next rally, but a wild backhand lets Fonseca back in for 40-30.
Still set point... and he takes the second with a forehand into the open court.
*Jakub Mensik 5-4 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:11 , Flo Clifford
Fonseca keeps himself in this set though with a pretty straightforward hold to 15, as Mensik hooks wide.
Jakub Mensik 5-3 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:08 , Flo Clifford
A 28-shot rally is exactly what this crowd came to see, a brutal baseline exchange with Mensik somehow hooking a lob out of nowhere - and the Czech outlasts Fonseca, who goes long!
Some tidy serving and another forehand error by the 19-year-old, and Mensik wraps up the hold.
*Jakub Mensik 4-3 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 20:04 , Flo Clifford
A lovely backhand drop shot by Mensik gets oohs and ahhs, and the Czech ventures forward again with another net volley bringing up another break point...

Jakub Mensik 4-2 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 19:59 , Flo Clifford
The Brazilian contingent are a lot happier as Mensik seemingly has Fonseca beat with a drop shot - but he digs it out and hammers his reply cross-court.
Mensik responds with a well-placed smash for 30-15. It’s a comfortable hold in the end as Fonseca goes wildly long on the forehand, and Mensik backs up his break.
BREAK! *Jakub Mensik 3-2 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 19:55 , Flo Clifford
In theory the roof being closed on Chatrier should favour Mensik’s flatter ballstriking, but Fonseca is largely coming out on top of the rallies, putting the Czech on the defensive before planting a vicious forehand cross-court.
But Mensik digs out a drop shot and palms a lovely volley out of the Brazilian’s reach, before Fonseca goes long and suddenly the Czech has two break points...
The first is saved as Mensik nets - but then Fonseca goes wide and the Czech gets first blood!
Jakub Mensik 2-2 Joao Fonseca*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 19:50 , Flo Clifford
So far Mensik has been somewhat outclassed, pushed and pulled around at will but some fine serving gives him some breathing room - until a loose backhand and a venture to the net brings up deuce.
Fonseca lunges for the ball and can’t keep it in - but then Mensik nets and it’s back to deuce.
The Czech ventures to the net again and this time it’s more successful as the ball dies away.
Now Fonseca fires long on one of the longest rallies so far, and Mensik holds.
*denotes next to serve
Jakub Mensik 1-2 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 19:42 , Flo Clifford
A couple of loose errors from Fonseca brings up 0-30, and a murmur of concern ripples around Chatrier.
He responds with a whip-smart forehand and gets Mensik on the run in the next rally, blasting down a smash to dig himself out of trouble. A roar from the Brazilian as Mensik can only palm his next serve into the net, and he holds as Mensik is forced out wide again.
Jakub Mensik 1-1 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 19:38 , Flo Clifford
The crowd shows their appreciation as Mensik goes for the drop shot, but Fonseca digs it out - only for Mensik to fire a lovely, sharply angled volley cross-court.
The Czech is looking a little tight in these early exchanges though and nets twice in succession, the second time with an open court at his mercy.
A booming ace down the T gets him back to 30-30. Another ace, and Fonseca finds the net to get the 20-year-old on the board.
Jakub Mensik 0-1 Joao Fonseca
Tuesday 2 June 2026 19:34 , Flo Clifford
Fonseca serves first. Mensik nets in their first exchange, before the Brazilian whips a looping serve out wide that the Czech cannot return.
Now Fonseca just about clips the line and Mensik cannot keep his forehand in the court. Huge ace down the T, and it’s a nice and simple hold to love for the 19-year-old.

Joao Fonseca v Jakub Mensik
Tuesday 2 June 2026 19:22 , Flo Clifford
After something of a delay from the scheduled 7.15pm start time, the atmosphere is building on Court Philippe-Chatrier and the players are about to emerge.
Joao Fonseca v Jakub Mensik
Tuesday 2 June 2026 19:07 , Flo Clifford
These two have only faced off once before, in the final of the ATP Next Gen event in 2024, a fast-four, heavily modified tournament.
Fonseca came out on top in five tight sets, so this one - a genuine best-of-five - could be a late one.
Joao Fonseca v Jakub Mensik
Tuesday 2 June 2026 19:00 , Flo Clifford
2025 Miami champion Jakub Mensik has also endured his fair share of epics this French Open, winning two lengthy five-setters - against Mariano Navone in the second round and coming back from two sets to love down against Andrey Rublev in the fourth round - to make the quarter-finals.
He beat wildcard Titouan Droguet in straight sets in the first round but has otherwise been made to work for it, and recovered from a 6-0 drubbing in the first set against Alex de Minaur to beat the eighth seed in four sets in the third round.
Joao Fonseca v Jakub Mensik
Tuesday 2 June 2026 18:52 , Flo Clifford
Brazilian 19-year-old Joao Fonseca has had a presence in this draw as destructive as his shotmaking, having seen off 24-time major winner and all-time legend Novak Djokovic in five thrilling sets in the third round.
He backed that up with a four-set win over two-time Roland-Garros finalist Casper Ruud in the fourth round to reach the last eight.
His earlier wins were over qualifier Luka Pavlovic in the first round and a five-set epic over Dino Prizmic - in which he came back from two sets to love down, the same as against Djokovic - to win.
Up next: Joao Fonseca v Jakub Mensik
Tuesday 2 June 2026 18:45 , Flo Clifford
The final match of today should be a thriller as two young starlets face off for a place in the semi-final.
Joao Fonseca takes on Jakub Mensik in the night session on Philippe Chatrier, which kicks off at 8.15pm local time (7.15pm BST).
Alexander Zverev on reaching a fifth French Open semi-final: 'I don't really care'
Tuesday 2 June 2026 16:30 , Jamie Braidwood
Alexander Zverev does not care about reaching semi-finals. He wants the title.
“I want to keep going, of course. I want to be in the tournament, and I want to win the matches that are ahead of me, and that's my goal, that's my aim.
“I feel like today was a very tough test against a very good player, and I managed. I won, and of course I'm happy to be in the semi-finals, but for now, that's it.
”He had a perfect rhythm in the first set, and I didn't. My balls were very short, I was very defensive. Again, the conditions completely different, string intention different, the way the ball reacts off the ground was completely different, the ball was not bouncing as high, so a heavy top spin was not really beneficial. I had to flatten my shots out a little bit more.
“He was playing amazing. He outplayed me in the beginning of the first set. But I managed to come back. He played a little bit of a nervous game, when he served for it, and then, yeah, I took my chance as well, and after that it was, it was a good match for me.”
Rafael Jodar's excellent breakout run ends in French Open quarter-finals
Tuesday 2 June 2026 16:25 , Jamie Braidwood
What a debut it’s been for Rafael Jodar. His second appearance at a grand slam and he only went and made the quarter-finals at the age of 19. He played some long matches, showed brilliant fight and grit, and will surely be back for lots more.
GAME, SET AND MATCH! Alexander Zverev returns to semi-finals
Tuesday 2 June 2026 16:18 , Jamie Braidwood
Zverev is through, 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-3 to the second seed as he closes in on his first major title! He is back into the French Open semi-finals for a fifth time in six years.
After a competitive first set, Zverev tightened his grip on the match and the 19-year-old Jodar faded in the second and third. He had a break point chance late in the third but Zverev found back-to-back aces to close it out. On match point, he thunders a forehand winner down the line. What a way to finish.
He will be the favourite against either Jakub Mensik, 20, or Joao Fonseca, 19, in the semi-finals. With experience on his side, as he bids for a fourth grand slam final, is this Zverev’s time at last?
*Rafael Jodar 6-7 1-6 3-5 Alexander Zverev
Tuesday 2 June 2026 16:15 , Jamie Braidwood
This was looking super assured from Alexander Zverev until he suddenly shanks a forehand that skipped off the chalk and has to look at 30-30.
Zverev then lasts wide on the backhand! From nowhere Rafael Jodar will have a look at break point, for the first time since the start of the opening set.
Zverev produces a huge serve down the T, then another ace out wide, to take the racket out of Jodar’s hand.
He holds.
Rafael Jodar 6-7 1-6 2-3 Alexander Zverev*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 16:02 , Jamie Braidwood
Alexander Zverev remains a break up. He is three games away from a fifth Roland Garros semi-final in six years. His previous two defeats in the tournament came against Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.
2025: Djokovic - quarter-finals
2024: Alcaraz - final
2023: Ruud - semi-finals
2022: Retired vs Nadal - semi-finals
2021: Tsitsipas - semi-finals
BREAK! Rafael Jodar 6-7 1-6 0-1 Alexander Zverev*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 15:42 , Jamie Braidwood
The fight is slipping from Rafael Jodar. He goes long of the baseline, with this one definitely out as the umpire checks the mark, before slumping a backhand into the net down two break points. Since serving for the set at 5-3 in the first set, the 19-year-old has only won a couple of games.
SECOND SET! *Rafael Jodar 6-7 1-6 Alexander Zverev
Tuesday 2 June 2026 15:36 , Jamie Braidwood
Zverev slams an ace out wide to move into a two-set lead. He took a bit of a roundabout way to close that out, surviving break point when Jodar was an inch or two long of the baseline with the lob from the net.
But there can be no doubt that Zverev was the dominant player in the second set, after a competitive opener. Jodar will need to do what he did in the fourth set against Pablo Carreno Busta and come from two sets down to win.
French Open: Rafael Jodar 6-7 1-5 Alexander Zverev*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 15:31 , Jamie Braidwood
Alexander Zverev brings Rafael Jodar into the net with a drop shot and Jodar attempts the angled volley, which is given out. Jodar appeals to the umpire, pointing to the mark on the clay, and it turns out Hawkeye says the ball landed in.
It brings up two break points for Zverev... the German plays a perfect point, hitting very close to the lines, and then executing another drop shot that Jodar can’t pick-up. That seals the double-break, but that was also another controversial moment for calling the lines...
Why does the French Open not have electronic line calling?
French Open: Rafael Jodar 6-7 1-3 Alexander Zverev*
Tuesday 2 June 2026 15:21 , Jamie Braidwood
Zverev roars as he earns the break to lead the second set. That was a difficult game for Jodar, played as if he was hitting uphill. That’s the level of ball striking from Zverev on the return.
French Open: Alexander Zverev wins first set on tiebreak, 7-6 (7-3)
Tuesday 2 June 2026 14:58 , Jamie Braidwood
With his serve, Alexander Zverev has an impressive tiebreak record on the Paris clay. A loose forehand from Jodar moves the German two points away, with two points on serve to come.
Zverev hangs tough on the baseline, with Jodar pushing, then pulling the German in with the drop shot. Zverev races to meet it and steer the backhand winner.
