French Open draw: Emma Raducanu on Iga Swiatek collision course as Jack Draper learns Roland Garros path

The British cohort have been handed tricky first-round ties after the French Open draws were confirmed in Paris on Thursday.

Jack Draper is the highest-ranked of the British hopefuls, heading to Roland Garros as the men’s fifth seed after a superb last few months that saw him reach the semi-finals of the US Open before winning Indian Wells and making the final of the Madrid Masters.

Draper will take on the Italian Mattia Bellucci, and finds himself in section two of the top half of the bracket.

That means that the Briton is projected to face Alex de Minaur, the world No9, in the fourth round, before a potential quarter-final clash with top seed Jannik Sinner.

Sinner, playing in a first Grand Slam since his three-month suspension, will take on home favourite Arthur Rinderknech in his opening match.

Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Sinner in the Italian Open final last weekend, is seeded second, and he will face Kei Nishikori in the first round.

The Spaniard, defending his title in Paris for the first time, has fourth seed Taylor Fritz and eighth seed Lorenzo Sonego as his standout rivals in the bottom half of the draw.

Cameron Norrie and Jacob Fearnley join Draper, although both are unseeded and were vulnerable to draws against top players.

They were each dealt difficult hands, with Norrie, the former world No8, having to face Daniil Medvedev, the 11th seed and 2021 US Open champion.

The Russian beat the Briton in the opening round in Rome last week, and has a 4-0 head-to-head record against him.

Fearnley will play the former French Open winner Stan Wawrinka, who won his second major title in 2015 when he defeated Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic, the three-time champion at Roland Garros, is on the hunt for his 25th Grand Slam title, and he, as the seventh seed, will take on Mackenzie McDonald in his opening match.

He has been drawn in Alexander Zverev’s quarter, meaning that a last-eight encounter with the German could be on the cards, if the Serb is to get through Medvedev (or potentially Norrie) in the last 16.

On the women’s side of the draw, former US Open champion Emma Raducanu is looking to re-discover her winning form after a mixed clay-court swing so far.

She will play Chinese player Wang Xinyu, who she has a 0-1 record against. Wang stunned Raducanu in a three-set thriller in Linz back in 2021, when Raducanu was the top seed.

The Brit, should she exact her revenge on Wang, is slated to play fifth seed Iga Swiatek in the second round, while Elena Rybakina and last year’s defeated finalist Jasmine Paolini, the fourth seed, are the other notable names in Raducanu’s quarter.

Katie Boulter, the world No38, is the highest-ranked British women’s player, with Raducanu coming in at 43. Boulter will play an as-yet unknown qualifier first up.

Sonay Kartal, who caused a ripple at Indian Wells, coming through qualifying to reach the fourth round, is also in the main draw, as is Jodie Burrage. Kartal will play Erika Andreeva, the older sister of Mirra, the teenage sixth seed.

Should she win that, she could play 30th seed Anna Kalinskaya before a potential third-round encounter with world No2 Coco Gauff.

Burrage, in the draw using her protected ranking, takes on Danielle Collins, Raducanu’s recent conqueror in Strasbourg.

Should she progress, she could face Leylah Fernandez, Raducanu’s opponent in the 2021 US Open final, in the next round, followed by a third-round meeting with world no 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

Dan Evans and Billy Harris both lost in men’s qualifying, with Evans beating Harris, the sixth seed, in the opening round, while Harriet Dart, the 15th seed, was defeated in her first match, along with Heather Watson.

Francesca Jones is still in with a shot of making the main draw, and she plays in the final match of the preliminary tournament on Friday.
