World number one Novak Djokovic made easy work of unseeded Pole Hubert Hurkacz, cruising to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 victory on Philippe-Chatrier.
Rafael Nadal, an 11-time winner at Roland Garros, dropped just six games against Yannick Hanfmann and Roger Federer, making his first appearance in this tournament since 2015, eased past Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets.
In the women's draw, Serena Williams survived an early scare, coming from a set down to beat Vitalia Diatchenko 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.
But there was no hiding for Angelique Kerber as the fifth seed became the first major casualty of the tournament after shock first round defeat at the hands of Anastasia Potapova.
It's been a decent start for the British contingent in Paris with both Johanna Konta and Kyle Edmund sealing their places in the second round.
Konta beat German qualifier Antonia Lottner 6-4, 6-4 to reach round two of the French Open for the first time in her career, following up on her impressive performance in the Rome Masters final earlier this month.
Edmund, the highest-seeded British man with Andy Murray not entering the tournament this year, battled past Jeremy Chardy in a five-set thriller in the first round. The match was suspended due to bad light but the 24-year-old won the final set to progress 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
