The Swiss legend beat compatriot Stan Wawrinka 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in a thrilling contest to set up a clash with friendly rival Nadal - who beat Kei Nishikori - on Friday.
In the women's draw, Johanna Konta became the first British woman in 36 years to reach the French Open semi-final.
The Brit beat 2018 finalist Sloane Stephens 6-1, 6-4 in a stunning performance to book her spot in the last four.
She will face 19-year-old Marketa Vondrousova, who beat 31st seed Petra Martic 7-6, 7-5, for a place in Saturday's final.
