French media marvel over Celtic 'giant' as Lewis Morgan impresses in unfamiliar role

The Rennes fans emerged with more credit than their team, as the French media were left unimpressed by last night's loss to Celtic.

The Hoops easily secured a 3-1 win which, combined with Lazio 's victory over Cluj in Rome, means they go through as group winners.

When the groups were drawn the Ligue 1 side were flying high but they've yet to win a match in the Europa League.

Ouest France lamented "dominated for the major part of the match (Rennes) missed the chance to restore their honour".

Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster was referred to as "the giant" and Rafik Guitane came in for particular criticism.

Awarding him 2/10 in the player ratings they wrote: "For the first start of his Rennes career, he wore the number 10, recalling in passing the price of his transfer.

"A very mediocre performance, as a playmaker he was like a skier in the middle of the desert.

"He never had the slightest influence, often losing it with his first touch or playing the ball backward.

"He didn't fashion a single opening to provide a chance and on top of it all there was the continual nonchalance, pressing as though was out for a Sunday jog."

The Breton newspaper did, however, praise the visiting supporters for travelling in numbers and making plenty of noise.

Such was the good mood in the stadium, the 2,500 Rennes fans even cheered for the second Celtic goal.

Ahead of the match the visitors had insisted they were coming to Glasgow to redeem themselves and not as tourists, but L'Équipe felt they ended up doing something "between the two".

The sports paper felt "the scoreline was harsh" as "Celtic scored three goals with their six shots on target, which demonstrated the ruthlessness they showed quite well".

In their 'tops and flops' section Le Figaro were full of praise for Lewis Morgan .

"He's not a striker," they wrote. "But you couldn't tell."

Gerzino Nyamsi came in for criticism though as he was "easily outstripped" for both the first and third goals.

The French arm of Eurosport went off coach Julian Stéphan's description of Celtic Park as a "cathedral of football". Rennes "sought redemption and rebirth against this Scottish legend" but "despite an encouraging start to the match, they were soon caught up in their shortcomings".

Those shortcomings included "a very timid attack, an ineffective press and especially a dismal defence".

Despite acknowledging the game as "a match without stakes", France Info felt "Rennes may have delivered their best match in the Europa League".

According to the website: "without a very good Edouard Mendy, the score could have been even more severe. But Rennes showed a beautiful face, for a club that had nothing to hope for from the competition. Perhaps to save their honor, they wanted this on Thursday."
