French inventor Franky Zapata crashes home-made hoverboard into lake

Franky Zapata, a French inventor who created his own hoverboard, has been injured after losing control while 15 metres in the air.

He fell into a lake on Saturday while showing off his "Flyboard".

The crash happened during an exhibition event in Biscarrosse, a town about an hour from Bordeaux in France.

The 43-year-old former jet-skiing champion was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

He took to Twitter to thank the emergency services and announced taking a day off on Sunday, only to get back to work on Monday.

"This is a reminder that we are not birds and if we are not excellent, it's gravity that wins", Mr Zapata said in his tweeted statement.

"We can only learn from our mistakes."

In a previous crash in 2019, while attempting to cross the English Channel, Mr Zapata took a fall while trying to fuel the hoverboard on a landing platform.

Just a week later, he made a second attempt and managed to cross the channel, starting near Calais and landing near Dover in just over 20 minutes.

Mr Zapata is no stranger to flying his hoverboard near large crowds, as he flew over the Champs-Élysées in Paris during Bastille Day in 2019.
