French government spokesman quits amid talk of Paris mayor bid

Ludovic Marin, AFP | Benjamin Griveaux, France's outgoing government spokesperson, is expected to run for Paris mayor next year.

France's government spokesman and two ministers quit the cabinet on Wednesday as they prepared to run in European and municipal elections.

President Emmanuel Macron's office said spokesman Benjamin Griveaux had quit the government, along with Europe minister Nathalie Loiseau and digital economy minister Mounir Mahjoubi.

Loiseau's resignation was widely expected, since she will be leading Macron's centrist party, La République en Marche (LREM), in the May 9 European elections.

While they are yet to declare their bids, both Griveaux and Mahjoubi have been touted as possible LREM candidates in elections for Paris mayor, due in March next year.
