French clubs to meet EPCR chiefs as Leinster clash against Montpellier in doubt

French clubs will meet with Heineken Champions Cup organisers EPCR at 6pm Irish time to determine if the second round pool games involving their sides can go ahead.

New regulations in relation to UK travellers to France in a bid to lessen the impact of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 will become law at midnight tomorrow, and the French clubs argue that the development puts the entire second round of games in doubt.

Furthermore, reports from France suggest that Irish and British clubs may be prevented from travelling into the country, although clarification may come from the French government that the players are deemed essential workers and can travel.

Leinster's trip to Montpellier tomorrow morning is already on a knife-edge, with talks ongoing as to whether the game can go ahead at 8pm on Friday night.

"EPCR is in contact with the French authorities in order to understand the new travel measures and to assess if any matches in round two are affected,” read a EPCR statement.

Both clubs are insisting they are prepared to play having named matchday squads earlier today - both are doing everything in their power not to forfeit the tie, despite the number of Covid cases in each camp.

Leinster were due to fly out to Montpellier this afternoon but made the decision yesterday to postpone the trip until the morning of the game.
