The French Christmas in July markets have been cancelled for 2021 following the COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown in Greater Sydney.

The wintry event was originally planned for July 1 to 4 at the National Rose Garden in Parkes, before being postponed to July 29 - August 1.

Festival director Vincent Hernandez called it "heartbreaking news".

"It is with great sadness to announce the upcoming Christmas in July event will be cancelled," he said.

"We are super saddened to not be able to bring the event to light this year.

"It's heartbreaking news, as the team has been working very hard for months and have been looking forward to this event for a long time."

All Cinema ticket-holders will be fully refunded in the next couple of days.

The festival is a free event, which hosts a village of chalets shipped from Europe, stalls with sweet and savoury goods such as hot chocolate, crepes and a mulled wine garden.

There are fairy lights and Christmas carols alongside Christmas trees and canons shooting out fake snow.

The event started at The Rocks in Sydney in 2018, and was also held there in 2019.
