Freezing temperatures lead to 'amazing' ice formation developing on side of road in Worksop

An "amazing" ice formation spotted at the side of a road in Nottinghamshire has left passers-by in awe.

The county has been hit with numerous weather warnings, blanketed during heavy snowfall and chilled by sub-zero temperatures over the past few weeks, with travel warnings becoming a regular occurrence so far this year.

Despite the difficulties the weather did lead to some remarkable phenomenons, particularly in the north of the county, where the cold spell hit the hardest.

Simon Greaves, labour leader for Bassetlaw District Council, spotted a beautiful ice formation at the side of Mansfield Road in Worksop over the weekend.

Large icicles were seen hanging from the branches of trees and a section of fence bordering the road was engulfed in solid ice, seemingly the result of cars splashing through a roadside puddle.

Councillor Greaves said: "It was quite amazing. I've never seen anything like it."

The formation also sparked the interest of several passers-by.

One said: "Driven past it the last couple of days on my way to work. It's lovely."

Another added: "I saw that today. Quite the phenomena."

Temperatures have since risen and the county has warmed considerably, with the outlook for the week ahead looking rather mild in comparison.

Temperatures will reach a maximum of 11C, even rising to highs of 13C throughout the weekend, according to the Met Office.

The Met Office says: "A damp start this morning, but soon becoming bright with sunny spells. Turning cloudier later in the afternoon as a band of showers, some perhaps heavy, arrive from the west. Remaining mild. Maximum temperature 11 °C."
