Freezing temperatures, frost and a weather warning as wind speeds hit 70mph

A week of freezing temperatures, frosty nights and a windy weather warning lie ahead for Greater Manchester.

According to forecasters, Tuesday's clear skies are the calm before the storm, which will arrive into the region on Friday bringing powerful winds and a 'yellow' weather warning this weekend.

Oli Claydon from the MET office spoke to the Manchester Evening News about the week ahead.

On Wednesday, a cold front will be moving south across the UK from Scotland bringing with it colder air and some rain in the afternoon. Temperatures will peak at nine degrees.

That evening, temperatures will plummet as the cold front breaks through, with the mercury dropping as low as three degrees, and lower in rural areas with a chance of frost.

A brighter start to Thursday will be followed by colder weather again, with highs of five degrees taking Greater Manchester into a freezing night.

Oli said: "It's looking like it will be zero degrees over night in Manchester and even colder in the surrounding rural areas with a widespread frost on Thursday night and things turning more unsettled on Friday."

The weather warning for wind is activated on Friday for the wider area, with strong winds and heavy rain expected across the north.

The warning will be in place for Manchester on Saturday, with what Oli describes as 'unsettled spells' bringing rain and wind gusts of up to 50mph, or up to 80mph in coastal areas beyond the conurbation.

With highs of 8 degrees, the afternoon should brigten up, moving into a night temperature of around three degrees.

As the stormy front moves away, the cold air will return with Sunday peaking at 4 degrees, dropping to minus one overnight before the new week brings milder air from the West, as well as more rainfall off the Atlantic.
