Freezing temperatures can cause iPhones to switch off and kills battery

Apple users has been plagued with a range of iPhone issues - including dealing with cold weather.

Freezing temperatures sees some devices automatically switch off despite being fully charged.

Most electronics firms warn that their devices might experience problems in extreme temperatures - whether it's too hot or too cold.

That's because the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries inside iPhones contain an electrolyte liquid that crystallises when it drops below a certain temperature.

This prevents electricity from flowing through the battery, which can stop the phone from working altogether.

The effect is only temporary, and Apple says battery life will return to normal once you bring the device back to a higher ambient temperature.

The company recommends storing iPhones between -20C and 45C and not leaving them in a car overnight, as temperatures in can exceed this range.

On Apple's Support website, it explicitly states that using an iPhone in temperatures below freezing, the device might unexpectedly turn off.

"Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behaviour to regulate its temperature," the iPhone maker writes.

"Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range might temporarily shorten battery life."

Apple adds that very cold temperatures "could cause the device to turn off".

The support page continues: "Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures."

Apple devices can also turn off in scorching temperatures - and there are a range of things you can do to prevent your iPhone from overheating this summer:

1. Avoid direct sunlight

Keep your sun in the shade where possible.

2. Turn off apps you aren't using

Double tap the home button and swipe away apps you aren't using. This makes sure apps aren't running in the background and over-working the battery.

3. Buy a glare screen

Instead of keeping your brightness on high, which forces the battery to work harder, buy a glare screen that lets you see your screen in the sun.

4. Turn your phone off when you can

This saves the battery, and prevents your iPhone from overheating.

5. Take the case off

Your case will trap heat around your phone - take it off to allow your iPhone to cool.
