'Freezing rain' making conditions dangerous on Glasgow roads

Glasgow motorists are being warned of 'tricky' driving conditions this morning after 'freezing rain' fell on the city in the early hours.

A multi-vehicle crash this morning on the M73 in the Gartcosh area saw the temporary closure of the motorway as police and emergency services attended the scene.

And the M8 motorway was also restricted (eastbound) at Junction 7 due to another road traffic incident, with motorists warned by Traffic Scotland to use caution on approach.

TV weatherman Sean Batty warned people in the early hours of this morning to be careful due to glazed ice being present on roads and pavements after freezing rain fell on the city.

He tweeted: "Currently -2C with drizzle at @GLA_Airport. If it can find a way of not snowing here in the west, it will... This drizzle is freezing on impact (freezing rain) and giving glazed ice on roads and pavements.

"Be very very careful out there. This is happening in quite a few areas."

A Met Office yellow weather warning is in place in Glasgow and across Strathclyde for ice this morning until 11am - with ice patches causing some tricky driving conditions.
