Freezing fog sees temperatures plunge to -2C ahead of 'polar blast'

Britain is braced for a chilly weekend as temperatures plunge to -2C ahead of another cold week.

Freezing conditions are expected especially across northern parts of the UK, Met Office forecasters have said.

A "polar blast" could hit Scotland, bringing sub-zero temperatures into the region in the first real taste of winter, The Mirror reports.

On Saturday, most of the UK will be covered in fog and temperatures will remain cold, the Met Office said.

In the North East, we woke up to frost on Saturday morning with temperatures falling away to -2C, but it will become warmer than other parts of the country as the day goes on.

Most places will be dry and settled this weekend, but there will be a lot of freezing fog around, according to forecasters.

Met Office Meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: "Two words essentially sum up this weekend - dry and gloomy."

Two weather fronts are bringing a large amount of clouds in the country, with mist and fog seen especially overnight, the forecaster added.

Despite most of the country staying dry, some regions are likely to experience downpours during the day.

Mr McGivern said: "We will see some showers for south-west England into Wales into the early hours of Saturday.

"There will also be some showers in northern Scotland, but they are moving away."

Northern Ireland and northern England will experience clear spells, with a few freezing fog patches and frost in southern Scotland, according to the meteorologist.

Here is the forecast for the North East:

Saturday

Any early clear skies, but with patchy frost and fog, will soon be replaced by widespread dull and cloudy conditions. Hill fog will develop, along with outbreaks of rain this afternoon. Feeling cold. Maximum temperature 7 C.

Saturday night

Widespread mist and low cloud and hill fog will persist, but will prevent a frost from occurring. Also outbreaks of rain, especially this evening, with perhaps some heavier bursts initially. Minimum temperature 5C.

Sunday

Generally dull, cold with mist and hill fog, also possibly a little drizzle at times, However, some brighter spells may develop in the afternoon. Maximum temperature 9C.
