Freedom fighter Susheelamma dead

 

G. Susheelamma, the last freedom fighter from the legendary Vadakkath family at Anakkara in the district, died on Wednesday.

She was 100 years old. She will be cremated in the family compound on Thursday afternoon. She is survived by a son and a daughter.

Susheelamma was closely related to revolutionary freedom fighter Captain Lakshmi Sahgal and her younger sister and legendary dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai.

In February 1943, she was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for taking part in a student demonstration in front of the Presidency Magistrate Court, Egmore, Chennai. She was kept at the women’s jail at Vellore.

She is survived by a son and a daughter.

Condoling Ms. Susheela's demise, Kerala Assembly Speaker Rajesh recalled her contribution in the Indian freedom movement and said she worked for the empowerment of women.
