Boris Johnson announced that social distancing and compulsory mask-wearing would be scrapped on 19 July in an address to the nation on Monday evening.
Venues such as nightclubs are also set to reopen, in spite of rapidly increasing numbers of cases.
Prof Chris Whitty explained that the numbers of deaths and hospitalisations, though increasing, were not nearly as concerning as they had been in the first and second waves.
