'Freedom!': Braveheart impersonators base jump off the Wallace Monument

TWO men dressed as William Wallace have caused backlash after jumping off the Wallace Monument.

The Braveheart-styled base jumpers shouted "FREEDOM" as they leapt off the 220-foot structure, eventually landing in Stirling's Causewayhead park.

After climbing 246-steps to the top of the tower, the duo donned their kilts and parachutes and climbed onto the ledge.

When asked by a tourist if they were going "full Scotsman", one replied: "Unfortunately not, there are kids down there."

He added: “This is usually when people start phoning the police. We’re trained professionals — sort of.”

The move has been criticised by Stirling Council, who said new security measures would be put in place to prevent future unplanned jumps.

“Stirling council did not grant permission for this stunt. Staff responded in line with security protocols and police were called as soon as we became aware,” a spokesman said.

“This was a selfish act by a group of people with no consideration for the wider ripple effects of their actions and no consideration for the danger to the public.”

In the video posted on YouTube, onlookers can be seen watching from the top of the tower as the Wallace impersonators prepare to jump.

A Police Scotland spokesman said officers attended the scene “but there was no trace of anyone and no criminality established”.
