Free training courses have opened up in childcare centres. Pictured is ACT Skills Minister Chris Steel.

The ACT government has released spots for Canberrans to study things including aged care, digital skills, early childhood education and disability care for free.

There are up to 2500 places available to study over the next 18 months. Canberrans of all ages and employment status are eligible to access the training.

Canberrans could study a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, allowing them to work in childcare centres or a Certificate III in Individual Support to become a disability support worker.

Other courses include a Certificate IV in Mental Health, to support people suffering with mental illness; a Certificate IV in Ageing Support to work in aged care; or a Certificate IV in Cyber Security to become a cyber security paraprofessional.

ACT Skills Minister Chris Steel said the courses were part of a $126.3 million investment made to support Canberra's economic recovery from the impacts of COVID-19.

"These free training places will support local businesses to find the skilled workers they need and give Canberrans the opportunity to skill-up in areas where there are jobs at the other end," he said.

A range of other free courses are available to young people aged 17 to 24 and unemployed Canberrans.

Places in courses in hospitality, construction and retail are planned to be released in early 2022 in sectors identified by as having a skills shortage.

"If you're a school-leaver considering your plans for next year, or a job seeker looking for your next opportunity, JobTrainer is your chance to skill-up with free, work-focused training," Mr Steel said.
