New Year’s Eve is nearly here but you don’t have to spend a fortune to ring in 2022.
If you fancy going out there are plenty of New Year's Eve events you can book tickets for, including a ‘flapper and dapper’ event at the Peaky Blinders bar and a 20s themed Gatsby party at Revolution Albert Dock.
But there's also many free things you can do on New Year’s Eve if you don’t want to break the bank. Christmas is an expensive time of year after all, so you might be looking for ways to save money, or just don't fancy spending your cash on another night out.

With the government confirming there will be no further covid restrictions this side of New Year’s Eve, the night is yours to celebrate in whatever way you wish.
Here are some ideas for free things to do on New Year’s Eve in Liverpool.
Have a games night
Staying in doesn’t have to mean sitting in front of the telly. Get out the board games or a pack of cards and get competitive. A game of Monopoly will probably take up most of the evening, or you can play a few different games and choose prizes for the winners.
This is a good way to spend the night if you’ve got people of different ages to entertain as you can all take turns choosing the game.
Go for an after dark walk to see the Christmas lights
It won’t be long before all the twinkling lights are put away as the festive season draws to a close. If you haven’t seen Liverpool’s Christmas lights yet, head into the city centre and take a walk around. The lights look really beautiful throughout Liverpool ONE, Williamson Square and at the Albert Dock. Or you could simply take a walk around your local area to see the lights nearby and you’ll probably spot a few fireworks while you’re out as well.
Watch what’s on the box
If you want to stay in and watch TV for the night there’s plenty of options. The New Year’s Eve TV schedule includes:
BBC1
8.30pm: MasterChef Champion of Champions. Five former champions are set a challenge by singer and Table Manners podcast host Jessie Ware.
10.20pm: The Graham Norton Show. Graham is joined by Jessica Chastain, Claire Foy, Peter Dinklage, Michael Sheen, Cush Jumbo and Joe Lycett, plus music from The Divine Comedy.
11.25pm: The Big New Years & Years Eve Party with Kylie and Pet Shop Boys. Years & Years singer Olly Alexander performs hits and surprise covers, plus a duet with Kylie Minogue.
BBC2
11.25pm: Jools’s Annual Hootenanny. With music from the biggest stars and brightest new talent.
ITV
9pm: Spectre. James Bond is on a trail to uncover the existence of sinister organisation SPECTRE.
11.45pm: ITV news. The news programme rings in the New Year
Channel 4
9pm: The Last Leg of the Year. Celebrity guests join Adam Hills, Alex Brooker and Josh Widdicombe
12.05pm: Four Weddings and a Funeral. Eight friends attend four and cope with a bereavement.
Host a pub quiz at home
Invite some friends and family round, or - if you’re not fed up of it - have a quiz on Zoom with people who live further away. Get the drinks flowing, put out some ‘bar snacks’ and play in teams with silly names. There are plenty of online quizzes you can find - check out the ECHO’s selection here - or you could have a go at writing your own. You’ll need to pick a quiz master and no cheating!
Set some goals for 2022
What better time to think about the year ahead than New Year’s Eve. Spend the night writing up your wish list, dreams and hopes for next year. Your list of resolutions doesn’t have to be full of negative things you want to give up. You’ll feel more excited about working towards your goals if they’re fun things to do and achieve. Get creative and write them down, then put your list somewhere you’ll see it every day.
Have a movie night
Pick a selection of your favourite films and turn your lounge into a cinema for the night. Raid the cupboards and use up all the leftover Christmas snacks to make a movie night treat box. Turn the lights down low and snuggle up on the sofa to enjoy back to back films as the year draws to a close.
