Free swimming for Leeds youngsters during summer holidays - despite cuts

Children under the age of 16 will continue to enjoy free swimming in the summer holidays - despite Leeds council being hit by £616,000 of government cuts.

The cash provided free swimming for children and people aged over 60, but at yesterday's full Leeds council meeting in the Civic Hall, executive board member for leisure Labour councillor Adam Ogilvie said it was important youngsters were not deprived of swimming.

He said that the government's decision would particularly hit some of the city's most deprived communities where people needed to be encouraged to take part in sporting activities. Government funding will run out at the end of July.

Ogilvie told council:

"I am pleased to be able to say we have decided to continue the free swimming for children under the age of 16 for the duration of the school holidays."

Free swimming will end after the holidays finish.

Meanwhile, the council revealed that £2 million cash for the refurbishment of Aireborough Leisure Centre in Guiseley and Kirkstall Leisure Centre had been cut by the government.
