Free streams for Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder trilogy fight pose challenges for broadcasters

Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder will round off a trilogy of heavyweight tussles on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

After a draw in their first fight and a win for Fury in the second, it's the British fighter who will be putting The Ring and the WBC heavyweight straps on the line at the T-Mobile Arena, with Wilder seeking to finally get one over on the self-acclaimed Gypsy King.

The contest is set to be one of the most-watched sporting events of the year, with fans encapsulated by the previous meetings and the tense build-up to the third bout.

In the United Kingdom, BT Sport Box Office has the rights for the contest and customers can pay £24.95 to watch it. In the United States, it's available on ESPN Plus and will set a fight fan back $79.99.

Given the costs of these major boxing events are creeping up each year and money is tight for so many around the world amid the Covid-19 pandemic, fans are turning to different means to watch them. And these alternative options carry some risks.

On social media platforms and online forums there are links readily available to stream the action, albeit through illegal channels. Those broadcasting can use streaming tools such as screen-sharing and feed mirroring to project what they are watching to others provided they can evade detection.

While broadcasters have put measures in place to prevent this kind of piracy for their blue chip events, the swathes of links that are available after an online search make it difficult for them to shut down all illegitimate broadcasts.

Some of these streaming platforms will ask a user to sign up too, leaving a viewer more vulnerable to phishing scams and viruses that could impact their own devices upon which they are trying to watch the action.

For United Kingdom viewers, details on how to watch the fight can be found on the BT Sport website.
