Free skips organised throughout Hamilton this weekend

A free skip initiative has been organised in Hillhouse, Udston and Burnbank this weekend.

They will be placed around areas as part of the ongoing Our Place Our Plan project.

Last year, over 80 people took advantage of the free service which, in effect, saved the community over £2400 in additional uplifts.

The Our Place Our Plan Housing Environment Working Group have again successfully secured funding from the Community Choices budget to be able to offer the service.

Skips will be available on Saturday, May 25, between 10am and 3pm (or until full) and will be removed on the day. They will be placed in the three following areas:

• Hillhouse: Dunkeld Place

• Udston: Milton Terrace

• Burnbank: Burnbank Shopping Centre (the ‘Red Road’)

The initiative is being run by volunteers with the support of Community Links (South Lanarkshire).

Paul Hayward, Community Links communication officer said: “We are delighted to once again be able to offer this fantastic initiative to our local communities. This is a great opportunity to discard unwanted items safely and responsibility and make your community a better place to live.”

“If you are unable to make use of the skips, keep in mind that each household is entitled to one free uplift per financial year between April and March, which can be requested via the South Lanarkshire Council website. Thereafter, additional uplifts cost £30.90”.

The following is allowed in the skips: Bricks, rubble, wood, metal, hard core, furniture, furnishings, fittings (non-electrical), electrical goods, computer towers, screens, gas cookers, plastic, packaging (including cardboard, plastics, polystyrene), domestic waste such as food and food packing and soil (not contaminated with asbestos or oil).

The following is not allowed in the skips: Tyres, fridges/freezers, asbestos, hazardous waste (medical waste of any kind), gyproc and plasterboard, household and vehicle batteries, compressed gas cylinders/bottles (full or empty), solvents (paint and glue) and other chemicals (processing fluids, bleach, detergent).
