Free period products to be made available throughout East Dunbartonshire

Sanitary products are being made available for free throughout East Dunbartonshire from this week in a bid to tackle period poverty .

Twelve locations across areas such as Bearsden, Bishopbriggs and Kirkintilloch will provide free tampons, pads and other period supplies.

In January, the Scottish Government announced they would hand £4 million to councils to expand the number of places where free sanitary items are available – with funding for them available now and for the next financial year.

Weather forecast looks good for Glasgow next week with temperatures set to rise to 20 degrees

East Dunbartonshire Joint Council Leader Andrew Polson said: "Ensuring that free sanitary products are available throughout the area means that all of our communities will have access to this free provision if they need it.

"They'll be available in our Community Hubs, Community Centres and Public Halls, with signs advising people to take the supplies that they need."

Items have been made available in the ladies and/or accessible toilets in the following 12 locations:

Bearsden Community Hub

Auchinairn Community Centre

Milngavie Town Hall

Bishopbriggs Community Hub

Hillhead Community Centre

War Memorial Hall

Kirkintilloch Community Hub

Milngavie Community Education Centre

Westerton Hall

Lennoxtown Community Hub

Torrance Community Centre

The introduction of free sanitary products in the community follows the roll-out in all East Dunbartonshire schools last August.

Joint Council Leader Vaughan Moody added: "We are sharing our approach with Community Planning Partners, including the East Dunbartonshire Leisure Club Trust and the Health and Social Care Partnership, and looking for opportunities for further expansion of the scheme if this is required."
