Free period products plan wins SNP support after pressure from Labour

Plans for free period products are being backed by the Scottish Government after weeks of pressure.

Communities Secretary Aileen Campbell said the SNP will back Labour’s proposal to provide free sanitary ware.

But she raised “very real concerns” about the cost of a universal scheme.

Campbell said the government will back the initial draft of the law next week and work with other parties on the finances.

“Scotland was the first country in the world to make period products available for free in schools and colleges and to support access to period products for those on low incomes,” she said.

“Due to our world-leading action, over half a million people have access to free period products for the first time ever.”

Labour MSP Monica Lennon has been campaigning for support for her Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Bill.

It would put in place a legal duty on the government to ensure that period products are made available free of charge on a universal basis.

Schools and other education providers will have to offer period products  free of charge in toilets.

The Scottish Government estimates a universal scheme could cost around £24 million per year to deliver.

The SNP were under pressure to cave after Tories, Greens and Lib Dems backed Labour's plan.

They were also ridiculed after the Record revealed the Scottish Government were worried the universal scheme could lead to cross-border tampon raids.

Lennon said: "This is a victory for all of the campaigners and activists who have backed this legislation.

“Scotland has already taken important steps towards improving access to period products and tackling stigma. Legislation will guarantee rights, ensure that current initiatives continue in future on a universal basis, and will help us achieve period dignity for all."
