Free parking plan to increase footfall set to be scrapped in Bolton town centre

Visitors to Bolton town centre will no longer be given two hours of free parking from next week.

Drivers have been offered complimentary parking spots around the town since the beginning on the pandemic, in a bid to boost foot traffic for struggling shops.

The scheme, which included 2 hours of free weekday parking in on-street bays, multi-storeys and Ashburner Street car park, is now set to end on Monday, July 19.

Bolton council had initially planned to cancel the free parking programme in November 2020 but it was extended to support businesses which had struggled through the pandemic.

Free weekend and Bank Holiday car parking at Octagon, Topp Way, and Deane Road NCP multi-storeys will also come to an end from next week.

Bolton Council’s Deputy Leader, Coun Martyn Cox, said there would be a number of new schemes coming into force to help town centre businesses.

He added: “This council always backs local businesses and these parking offers have played a key role in bringing more people into the town centre.

“While this offer is coming to an end, we have a number of initiatives in place as we work to create a vibrant town centre and help the economic recovery.”
