Canberrans will be able to pick up dinner without the risk of parking fines in some of the territory's popular dining precincts.

The ACT government is relaxing parking restrictions to allow drivers to park for 15 minutes for free in restaurant and cafe precincts to collect takeaway food and drinks.

Planning Minister Mick Gentleman said signs would begin going up in areas such as Braddon, Woden, Belconnen and Tuggeranong. They would be attached to existing parking signs.

"This is a practical way we can make life a little easier for people during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have moved quickly to respond to a higher demand for short-term parking," Mr Gentleman said.

He reminded Canberrans that when leaving their household, they must not be gathering in groups no greater than two people excluding other household members.

"Canberrans should arrange delivery of items wherever possible and practice physical distancing if they must leave their home to pick up essential items."
