Free Palestine demonstrators bring traffic to standstill by staging 'sit down' protest on Oxford Road

Free Palestine demonstrators brought traffic to standstill by staging 'sit down' protest on Oxford Road.

Protesters from the Free Palestine movement gathered in Manchester earlier today, marching across the city centre.

Demonstrators are calling on the Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, to make a stand against Israel's actions.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) confirmed that the road is blocked.

TfGM, in a Tweet, said: "ROAD BLOCKED - Oxford Street, City Centre between Whitworth Street and Portland Street.

"This is due to a sit down protest in the road.

"Oxford Road services will be delayed and may be diverted. Check with your operator before you travel."

The demonstration is the latest in a series of Free Palestine protests held in Manchester city centre.

Some 254 people have died in Gaza and 13 in Israel before a ceasefire took effect on May 21.

The war was preceded by weeks of clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian demonstrators in the Old City and in the nearby neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah, where Jewish settlers have waged a decades-long campaign to evict Palestinian families from their homes.
