'Free' Netflix subscription scam lets hackers access viewers' bank accounts

Netflix viewers are warned to be on their guard against a scam designed to obtain a user's bank details.

With more than 167 million users around the world, Netflix is one of the most popular TV and movie streaming services.

But officials at South Lanarkshire Council have warned about the new scam, which could let hackers access bank accounts, MirrorOnline reports.

It explained: “We have seen a new scam email saying that you can win a year's premium subscription to Netflix. Clicking on the link leads to a genuine-looking login page which is designed to steal your account and payment details.”

The scam is circulating on both email and text, and prompts users to click a link to ‘update billing details following a failed payment.’

Anyone who clicks on the link is vulnerable to hackers being able to access and drain accounts.

Netflix said: “We will never ask for your personal information by texts or email. This includes credit or debit card numbers, bank account details, Netflix passwords.

“We will never request payment through a 3rd party vendor or website. If you receive a text or email requesting any of the above, it is not from Netflix.”

Anyone who receives a suspicious text or email that claims to be from Netflix, should not click any links in the messages or reply to them.

Instead, forward the message to phishing@netflix.com, before deleting it.
