In news guaranteed to bring a smile to the flushed faces of sun-baked Geordies, 500 ice creams will be handed out for free in Newcastle this month as a summer giveaway.
As the North East and the rest of the country is hit by another heateave, The Slug & Lettuce cocktail bar - whose menu currently has ice cream-themed cocktails - has announced that it will have its own ice cream van serving up complimentary treats on Newcastle quayside. People will, however, have a little while to wait for their chill-out gift as the van, which is to tour the UK, will not be rolling into town until August 30.
As well as 500 ice creams, including the likes of lemon sorbet and a martini-flavour, it also will be giving away other freebies from a spot in the car park behind Hard Rock Café from noon that day. On offer will be 30 goodie bags including a lipstick by British cosmetic company Beauty BLVD plus QR codes so that people can redeem a free summer cocktail at any Slug & Lettuce bar.

There are two branches in Newcastle - in Grainger Street, where it opened in 2019, and on the quayside - and the company's current ice cream-inspired cocktails on offer include four limited-edition flavours. Available until September 30, these are Fab You Lous, a pink gin, grenadine and strawberry concoction topped off with sprinkles; Mag Yum, including vodka, Disaronno Velvet cream liqueur and finished with chocolate powder; Slugero, with the likes of rum, Malibu and squirty cream, and Tongue Twister, described as the popular ice lolly with a boozy twist.
In another summer highlight, the Slug & Lettuce is also hosting two themed bottomless brunches to celebrate the season. Customers are being invited to live it up like a Love Islander or to enjoy a summer lovin' Grease event, on August 28 and September 24 respectively.
