'Free Hugs' man heading for Irvine today as campaign of kindness takes off

A Kilwinning man who is spending hours giving out free hugs on the street is bringing his campaign of kindness to Irvine this afternoon.

Alan Asbury, who is offering up the simple act of affection to raise awareness of suicide prevention, is hoping for a warm welcome from shoppers.

Alan, a former student of James Watt College, will be basing himself outside Asda - next to the Rivergate Shopping Mall - as he heads into a third day of campaigning.

He hit the headlines locally and nationally yesterday after we revealed he was giving out free hugs in his hometown.

Alan admits he has been blown away by the public's response so far - both on the streets and social media.

He said: "The response has been so positive and I'm hoping it will be the same in Irvine!"

He was inspired to act following a spate of untimely deaths in Kilwinning in recent years.

He said: "I have never lost anyone to suicide but in the past few years Kilwinning has lost a lot of young people to suicide and it has to stop.

"I am not looking for any money or any awards but if I can make a difference simply just by offering a hug it could make a big difference to someone's life when needed the most.

"Anyone is welcome to join me as they wish. "It's about time this town starts to have a bit of healing and honour those who have passed away and maybe just maybe prevent someone else from taking their life too soon!!

"A small kind gesture can help save lives."
