Free hot chocolate at Ayrshire Christmas market this weekend

Santa’s Grotto, a Christmas market and arts and crafts are among just some of the attractions at a special Ayrshire festive event scheduled for this weekend.

Taking place on Sunday, December 11, the community yuletide event promises to be a brilliant celebration for young people and families in the build up to Christmas Day.

North Ayrshire Council has been supported by the Marymass committee and the Irvine Youth Forum to help bring the plans to fruition over a frantic few weeks of preparation.

It will fill a void following the cancellation of the community lights switch-on.

The event kicks off at 11am at the Bridgegate and there will be five hours of festive fun and a range of activities.

These include: Christmas Market, Santa’s Grotto, free hot chocolate, food vendors, High Street stores open, a mobile youth centre, Activator bus, children’s Bookbug sessions, KA Leisure – soft archery and arts and crafts sessions.

The range of activities will take place from 11am until 4pm and there will also be a selection of musicians - including the Ayrshire Rock Choir from 3.15pm - that will bring a touch of Christmas cheer throughout the day.

From 4pm, there will be a family movie screening – with the film to be decided by you.

Check out the council’s Facebook page to vote for your favourite Christmas movie.

Councillor Marie Burns, leader of North Ayrshire Council, said: “There was obviously disappointment when a community group were not able to organise a Christmas lights switch-on celebration. It is a huge undertaking so it is understandable.

“So, we are delighted to be able to bring the community yuletide event to Irvine and a huge thanks to the Marymass committee and the Irvine Youth Forum in their support in bringing this together.

“It will be a celebration of all things Christmas, bringing together the community in a fun, relaxing and enjoyable way! We will have things for all the family from Bookbug sessions for Under-fives, Santa’s Grotto for children and the mobile youth centre for any young people. “
