Free food fridge removed from Queen's Park over fears it 'could be misused'

A community fridge in Queen's Park offering free food, baby formula and other essential supplies has been removed by Glasgow City Council.

We reported last week how a 'community pantry' had popped up in Queen's Park to the pleasure of many local residents, organised by activism group Food Not Bombs.

The group posted to social media on Thursday afternoon asking the public if they had seen the fridge, believing it to have gone missing - later updating it was in fact removed by council chiefs.

Asking about the fridge, a council spokesperson told Glasgow Live it was removed due to safety fears, despite the 'good intention'.

They said: “We understand the good intentions behind this idea, but we were concerned the unsupervised fridge could be misused and lead to harm of someone in need.

“On balance we felt the safest option was to have it removed.”

Members of the local community railed against the news.

One user wrote: "This is awful news, sick of never being able to have anything nice without people spoiling it. Really hope you get to the bottom of it."

Another wrote: "I'm so sorry to hear this. If you get it back maybe try to have it positioned in a community project /health or housing association building so local people can still access it easily but it's safer."

It is unclear if the pantry will be re-installed in a different area.
